From Billboard.biz August 17, 2011 By Emmanuelle Saliba, (@ignitethesound), New York Today (August 17), the American dubstep artist Skrillex announced the launch of his new OWSLA label. Tim Smith, Skrillex’s manager and owner of the Blood Company (a management company) as well as Kathryn Frazier (owner of the publicity firm Biz 3) and publicist Clayton Blaha (Biz 3) have all signed on as business partners in the venture. The label’s first releases will come from Bristol-based dubstep producer Koan Sound, electro-house newcomer Porter Robinson from North Carolina, singer/songwriter Alvin Risk, and San Francisco based M Machine (formally Metropolis). “Artists will be hand selected by Skrillex and the OWSLA team in an effort to unite under a cohesive theme of friendship and integrity – as well as bass,” Blaha told Billboard.biz. Dubstep DJ/producer Sonny “Skrillex” Moore has had quite a year: His most recent EP “More Monsters and Sprites” released on June 7, 2011, peaked at No. 3 on the Heatseekers Albums and No. 5 on Billboard’s Top Electronic Albums. His sophomore EP sold 12,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. And his first EP, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites,” released in 2010, sold 83,000 copies. He also played several of the biggest music festivals, including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Ultra Music Festival, Camp Bisco X and Hard LA. The announcement also helps explain the rather strange viral video campaign that appeared on Skrillex’s YouTube channel. The videos, entitled “OWSLA #1″ and “OWSLA #2,” featured the mysterious eye-liner wearing OWSLA Urchin aka the “Dupstepchild” throwing stuffed animals and balloons at the camera.

Last week OWSLA released the new Birdy Nam Nam EP, Defiant Order, which arrived with a slew of remixes by DJ Craze, Breakbot, UZ, and Block Beattaz. But today we’re about to do you one better with an exclusive video of Craze cutting up the track live. “The most important thing for me is to give it that human funk,” Craze comments on cutting up a live remix. “Whether you’re playing an instrument live or scratching live or whatever—as long as it’s got that human funk. I wanted to give this mix a little bit of what I can bring to the table, with the scratches and that swing I love having in my music. I focused on the vocals ’cause they sounded organic and added some horns to give it that funk.” Below you can check out both the live mix on video and grab Craze’s remix from the Defiant Order EP. Alex Metric’s stock as an internationally in-demand producer, remixer and DJ show no signs of slowing. Fresh from three consecutive US headline tours with sets at the huge EDC in Las Vegas plus numerous HARD appearances, London-born Alex Metric is having something of a moment since setting up home within Skrillex’s OWSLA camp in 2013. Despite sustaining his prominence within the UK dance scene over the years, whether via his own productions or quality remixes that consistently see him topping the tastemaker Hype Machine Charts, Metric has successfully made that leap over the big pond and boy, has it paid dividends. Catching the wave of interest in all things electronic from our American cousins, Alex has been in constant motion across the Atlantic these past 18 months, playing clubs the lengths and breadth of the country including the legendary Popscene at Rickshaw Shop in San Francisco, LA’s Avalon Room and the Webster Hall in New York. Metric has proved time and time again that he can hold his own alongside heavyweights such as OWSLA label boss Skrillex, Calvin Harris and A-Trak and finally, the World is stopping to take notice. But what lead Metric here? Looking back, Metric sees his 2011 debut album Open Your Eyes featuring the likes of Charli XCX and Ian Brown as the encapsulation of his production work to date. Once arguably better known for his consistent and game-changing remixes for the likes of Depeche Mode, N.E.R.D, Ellie Goulding, Bloc Party, and La Roux, Metric has long shown an apt ability to manipulate tracks and then stamp himself right through them. Producing other people’s records is the realisation of a dream, but even as a teenager growing up in the countryside, it was something Alex wanted to do. He could sing and learnt to play the keyboard at an early age but never warmed to the idea of being in a band himself. Initially an indie kid, his conversion to dance music came when he once missed the bus home and decided to kill some time in a record shop. Fatboy Slim’s 1996 album Better Living Through Chemistry was playing at one of the listening posts. “I was blown away. There were guitars, these big broken beats and this mad energy. I bought it there and then. It was a massive turning point.” After studying music at college in Guildford, Alex released a string of singles on a series of dance labels—a mix of progressive house, breakbeat and techno. His break came in 2006 when he signed to Adam Freeland’s Marine Parade label. “I’d been making proggy, breakbeaty stuff and I was doing OK at it,” he remembers. “But one night I was DJing in Russia and I realised right there on stage that I didn’t like the records I was making. I had an epiphany. I thought: What’s the music I love? French house, rock music, electro. Why don’t I chuck everything I love into one record?” The result was his 2007 single “Whatshewants”, the starting point on the journey towards his current position as one of dance music’s most exciting new talents. Fast forward to a few years later, and Metric’s focus has naturally honed to what he does best: making banging club records for clubbers and DJs alike. The self-released ‘Rave Weapon’ in 2012 did just what it said on the tin – got dancefloors heaving and BBC Radio 1 hot under the collar: a camp that has long supported him with everyone from Annie Mac to Pete Tong playing his records. The latter even personally invited Metric to play his 20th anniversary show at the BBC’s hallowed Maida Vale studios in London. 2013 followed in a similar vein with the second release in his now legendary ‘Ammunition’ series for OWSLA, featuring the stunning ‘Prophecies’ which cranked things up to 1000 and propelled Metric even further into the big arena league with a its mechanical beat juxtaposed against sweet melodies. That was swiftly followed early 2014 with the current Ammunition collection via ‘Hope’, which came through to raise the bar and announce Metric to the world as a vanguard of contemporary electronic innovations. New release ‘Heart Weighs A Ton’ sees Metric arguably jump two-feet in to the ‘chameleon’ tag with a pop-tinged track that looks set to outstrip all of his previous releases as the biggest yet. Metric is certainly carving out a niche in the new frontier of electronic music in America. Skrillex’s respect for him as DJ and producer paved the way for him to settle down nicely amongst his OWSLA label mates. Metric continues to reinterpret and pay homage to the great genres of UK dance past while weaving in the freshest contemporary sounds of his new home. A chameleon maybe, but Alex Metric is undeniably one of the greatest contemporary UK dance exports.
Globally known, Brooklyn-born DAVID HEARTBREAK remains accredited as an innovative leader in electronic dance music (EDM). He began his musical journey in hip-hop but his eclectic evolution of sound translates from his love of traveling and his interest in different cultures. Currently he has performed in over 30 countries. His Inspiration comes from listening to different genres of music from all around the globe. Some of his direct influences include world-renowned producers such as Timbaland, Afrojack, Skrillex, Dada Life, and Burial. Heartbreak goes knee-deep into the world of electronic music by weaving a wide range of elements such as dubstep, electro, trance , future bass, kuduro, dutch house, and dancehall. He proves to be a mastermind by always being groundbreaking, taking risks and adding his own unique Midas touch of genius to anything he touches. Unparalleled in his dedication to the EDM movement, Heartbreak has captured the attention of both established and aspiring artists, such as Skrillex, Diplo, Bassnectar, and many more. He has a wide range of fans who he lovingly labels as his “EDM family”. Consistently giving back, Heartbreak has released 22 free incredibly well received EPs. Featured consistently on the high-profile BBC Radio 1 and many other international radio shows, the onslaught of adoration has only continued as Heartbreak continues to gain attention and recognition everywhere from the blog world to the Washington Post.
Something’s afoot in Hamburg. While the past years, decades even, were dominated primarily by the Frankfurt and Berlin schools of techno, constantly setting the tone and pace for progression of a rather hard-edged style of dance music, the Hanseatic City is increasingly coming into its own. The newest and literally one of the youngest representatives of this blossoming yet adamant Hamburg-bred club music goes by the name of ETNIK. Born in 1992, he is already being coined the wunderkind of new German techno. What’s more, it took him just one gig in Hamburg’s Baalsaal to get himself a record deal. “It was quite overwhelming,” ETNIK recounts. “My initial plan was to not venture into DJ’ing before having established myself with a few tracks of my own to show. Though at the time I was familiar with the Baalsaal’s manager and he invited me to DJ one night. It was actually my first official DJ set. That night an A&R Manager from Warner happened to be among the guests. He saw me, heard me and thought to himself: ‘Whatever else it is this guy does, we need him!’ A mere two weeks later I was seated at a table with the folks from Warner and we discovered that we have the same vision and idea of who I am and where I want to go with my music.” And so he signed on with bitclap!, Warner Music’s Dance label. A rapid rise to fame? Overnight stardom? Far from it. Despite his young age ETNIK’s signature sound has been a long time in the making. “When I was seven, I remember hearing Sven Väth’s ‘Dein Schweiss’ for the first time and being stricken. From that moment on I knew that I wanted to do something just like that.” For years he worked on developing his highly charismatic sound. “I want each of my tracks to boast a strong identity, while remaining distinctly different from one another. The danger in looking to form a signature sound is that, at the end of the day, many of your productions will pretty much end up sounding the same. I try to avoid this at all costs.” So it came that ETNIK spent most of his days as a young teenager sitting in his room, refining sounds, beats and dynamics. “My friends and classmates were all listening to hip hop and r’n’b. This made me and my inclination towards everything electronic a perpetual outsider,” he remembers. “At the same time I am a big fan of percussion. And so from time to time I catch myself including hip hop-based drum patterns in my techno.” All that at an age, when others are busy flipping through the latest Harry Potter novel. But the thing most refreshing about ETNIK is not his youth. It’s his merciless and surprisingly confident sound, backed by a sense of style that is spot-on. ETNIK, which is his real name by the way, grew up in Hamburg as the son of Albanian immigrants, who supported his musical ventures from day one. His aim, from the outset, was to pair techno with rare elegance. Instead of overloading his music with sounds, ETNIK prefers to omit all that is superfluous and to focus only on the essentials. His music cuts to the chase and shows poise, where most others succumb to irritating effects: Shaken, not stirred! “I’m an absolute perfectionist, constantly seeking the ultimate,” he explains. “It doesn’t take me long to complete 80% of a track. The final 20% however may take me months. I may even choose to place an already finished track back in the archive because I suddenly dislike the way the hi-hat sounds.” As a result it took ETNIK an entire two years of working on his first tracks before he was ready to upload them to SoundCloud. His efforts have paid off. The tracks and remixes uploaded to his SoundCloud channel currently boast close to 1 million plays and counting. It doesn’t come as a surprise then, that ETNIK shows an equally steady hand when it comes to his appearance: It just fits. “I really value the big picture. Everything needs to be in the right place to form a unity, bearing a clearly defined character within.” His music is inspired by contemporary artists such as Boys Noize, Tiga, D.I.M and Kraftwerk as well as by old-time greats the likes of Johann Sebastian Bach. So encountering a few bars of a violin solo somewhere in his sounds wouldn’t be that big a coincidence. Or possibly more vocals in the near future: “I really enjoy vocals. They are excellent to play around with. I’ve already set my sights on a couple of possible future collaborations and it’s looking good.” ETNIK surprises with concentrated beats, thrilling by omission rather than stoic stomping, choosing broken rhythms over straightforward four-to-the-floor beat patterns. All of the latter enhanced by a healthy dose of “crackle” and homemade Sawtooth synth sounds, bestowing upon his relentless tracks a certain analog fragility and thus a soul. But above all, ETNIK’s trademark wicked drops, catch you off guard and knock you off your feet. Leading us to his philosophy: “In your face, but always in style!” In his music, he values quality over quantity. And this attitude has led to his success. People just loved his sound, one of them being SCNTST from Boys Noize Records. Meanwhile SCNTST and ETNIK are friends and have released music together on the in-house record label ‘Boysnoize Records’. “That is all part of the larger plan,” ETNIK explains, “not to settle with one label, one direction, one business deal. I like how contacts and opportunities grow naturally and I want to put all these chances to use.” ETNIK’s increasing popularity as a producer is mirrored in his undeniable talent as a DJ, where he equally values extensive build-ups and clearly nuanced scripts. Just playing one track after the other is not his thing. Instead “it may come down to me playing a 90-minute-set with 30 or 40 different tracks, mixed and delivered to the people. And, what’s most important, with no loss in tension.” With all that said, ETNIK simply considers himself an entertainer with a coherent master plan. In case you were wondering: The inverse И in his logo is actually part of a visualized Sawtooth wave, as used in his tracks. ETNIK has thus already clearly positioned himself in the techno scene with his own signature. A young man, highly recognizable in sound and appearance, he produces a style of techno quoting the genre’s history and bringing it up to date so skillfully that many of the quotes used become apparent only after repeated listening. The five tracks featuring on ETNIK’s EP “Neon Daze”, released last year in November via bitclap! / Warner Music, lay further emphasis on his range and caliber as a producer. “Neon Daze”, the title track, is a massive stomper with elaborate beats, an agonizingly intense bassline with skillfully sprinkled vocal samples. “Nixon”, as yet, is possibly one of the meanest marching versions of Future-Tech-Funk around. “Vault” is a brilliantly unfriendly tune to be played in the spanking early morning hours, right as the temperature in the club is about to hit the ceiling. “La Nuit” masterfully plays with distorted melodies and disturbing background noises, while “Boaws” concludes the EP, taking it back to the intricate Electro sounds of the 90’s with spheric keys and zero gravity. Five tracks, five drafts and one clear purpose: Right on the mark, full speed ahead, but always in style. His unique abilities have also been recognized by many a colleague of his genre. In 2012 he was invited on a big tour of Australia, while also supporting deadmau5 on his tour of Germany, playing in front of a thousand plus people each night. Yet, the following experience proved to be even more momentous: “One day, friends told me that Skrillex had posted a remix of mine on his Facebook fanpage. He then followed me on Twitter and let me know that he liked my productions, which led to us communicating regularly up until today.” As a result, ETNIK’s releases are now also being distributed in the US via the Skrillex-owned label OWSLA. It is hard to imagine a greater honor or accolade for a young techno producer with his clear vision and equally strong ambitions. After spending most of this past year touring and performing innumerable highly acclaimed gigs across the globe, ETNIK is now ready to impress with his latest feat. October 17th will see the release of his new “Unclassified” EP via OWSLA, proving that he is in fact unclassifiable. The release’s title track “Unclassified” features Mykki Blanco’s razor sharp rhymes over an incredibly dense, hip hop-inspired beat; a dark club anthem at the helm of future rap. The new EP also includes the mysteriously simmering “Take A Shot”, infused with a driving tech-funk beat, the extremely minimalistic “N7”, decked out in a pumping, classic ‘90s beat, set to wreak havoc on the dance floor, as well as the crisp, funky techno track “Nighthawk”. ETNIK has once again produced an EP that absolutely stands out from the current electronic crowd. Or in the words of the man himself, his music is “In your face, but always in style!” More to come…
Josh Gard has had a long history in music, and lately he has been rapidly rising up the ranks for all things bass. Just a few short years ago he donned the name Figure and began making electro house, but has since become a regular name in all realms of electronic and dance. Scoring positions among the charts may have gotten him recognition, but a hefty amount of praise has been raining down on him lately as some of the leading artists in electronic music have valued his live performance skills as some of the best in the business. With releases alongside industry heavyweights Diplo, Tommy Lee, Flux Pavilion, Excision, BT, Tommy Sunshine, and Borgore, as well as a robust catalog of originals, bootlegs, and remixes, Figure’s signature sound has earned him a cult following amongst a growing number of insatiable fans. In 2011, his Monsters of Drumstep series married his love of horror with his immense production skills to become the soundtrack for the Halloween season. His follow up “Destruction Series” added a new ride to the amusement park with twists and turns through an intergalactic electro war armed with robots and missile drop laser synths. “I just like how artists present a package of something close to an adventure… Like a theme park of sound that is an experiment and experience for everyone,” states Gard. When he’s not on tour or recording in his hometown studios in rural Indiana, Gard is touring worldwide, with packed tents at festivals like EDC, SnowGlobe, Starscape, The Bounce, Creamfields Australia, and Belgium’s Dour.
Sounding as if Stereolab, the Postal Service, Broadcast, Laura Nyro, and Björk were the top five of their collective playlist, Hundred Waters are a quartet from Gainesville, Florida whose soft combination of organic and electronic attracted the most unlikely of label bosses, superstar DJ Skrillex. Members Nicole Miglis, Trayer Tryon, Paul Giese, Zach Tetreault, and Allen Scott played together in various formations as friends back in middle school, but it took until adulthood and 2011 for them to become Hundred Waters. Living together in one house meant the band had a communal mentality, yet over time, a unique technique of the five members recording and composing on their own was developed, and soon jam sessions evolved into individuals working on the same songs but alone, in different rooms. The group felt that greater care was being put into the work and the results displayed it. The best results were released by the Elestial label in 2012 as the band’s self-titled debut album. Skrillex caught wind of the release and signed the band to his OWSLA label that same year. AraabMuzik, Star Slinger, and Troublemaker were some of the remixers who contributed to their first OWSLA release, the 2012 EP Thistle.
Jack Beats have a plan. That plan involves taking the very best, most spectacularly effective pieces from a vast array of different musical genres and blending them together into an irrepressible force that detonates on contact. When you lay it out like that it all seems quite simple really, doesn’t it? “It’s all in the influences,” says Niall Dailly, the Scottish half of the band. “There’s always room for a drum n bass breakbeat, or an old rave riff, or a vintage house sample.” “It might be a hip hop loop, some unlikely, twisted up dubstep bassline or a more minimal techno feel,” says the other half of the band, Ben Geffin. “All these ideas are fed into what we do in the studio. And suddenly…” “Suddenly it sort of works!” laughs Niall. “We just love hybrid music. So now we’re making our own brand of hybrid music and shaking it all up a bit.” Niall and Ben describe the release of their mini albums as a “summing up” of everything they’ve experienced to this point. “They’re a showcase of everything that we’ve got going on,” says Niall. “We’ve really got the bit between our teeth here. We’re always trying to be original and do something different. That’s the hip hop side of us; because in that culture, if you weren’t being original, if you were biting other people’s ideas, you’d be out of a job.” Through their six singles and a string of monstrous remixes for the likes of Skream, Beyoncé, Aloe Blacc, Big Boi, Florence & The Machine and La Roux they have formed a relationship with an increasingly hungry audience. “We’re in a world of our own,” Ben says. “We’ve always made music that’s quite forward-thinking and different. So much so that, sometimes, we’re not sure whether anyone else is even into it. There’s a bit of fortune-telling going on in what we do, but we both have patience, we never release anything until we know it’s absolutely right.” For Niall and Ben the joy in music is in the idea and its execution. They’re relentlessly moving forward and they’re intent on bringing us all with them. “There’s nothing more satisfying than when we’ve done something that we think might go over everyone’s heads and six months later everyone loves it! It gives you more confidence in the weirdness of your ideas…” It’s that weirdness of ideas that has propelled Niall and Ben since they put out their first Jack Beats track in 2007. They’re both multiple award winning DJs; in a previous life Niall was DJ Plus One from Scratch Perverts while Ben was a founder member of The Mixologists. Serious turntablists, the pair inhabited a world where endless hours were spent practising scratch routines. “But we would mainly talk about music, get drunk and go to clubs,” admits Ben. “It’s such a nerdy boys’ thing, it becomes your whole world.” “I was going pretty insane by the time I finished,” laughs Niall. “I found that I wanted to be in my studio more than practising. After winning the DMC title in 2001 I decided to buy some kit and start making music.” The pair ended up working together on a Dirty South hip-hop track called ‘Fame And Money’ and that is where Jack Beats really began. “I was a straight up raver at mid 90′s raves for years, and me and Niall both religously went to Movement in the jungle days,” says Ben. “We both used to go together to shit like Plastic People back in the early 2000′s with the beginnings of dubstep…sublow grime days with 100 peeps in there.” However, both were in to bass music too and began making it with the new sound emerging from producers like Dave Taylor AKA Switch. Grime and dubstep and rave and bass music were all developing rapidly and Niall and Ben started to create their own music that drew on them all. Their ideas were honed in years spent DJing together in clubs, after-parties and raves and by 2007 they had forged a unique style that exploded with the release of their mix of AC Slater’s ‘Jack Got Jacked.’ It was the American crowd that initially picked-up on the guys, with US blogs going crazy for the unique style they heard on Jack Beats’ mix of Jack Got Jacked. “‘Jack Got Jacked’ was the first time we chopped everything all up and dropped straight into a huge bass line,” smiles Niall. “That sound became synonymous with us – that was how we do our shit.” “That was when everyone turned their heads towards us,” says Ben. “And it got blogged about like crazy. And we did that tune in about two days, which is weird, because we take about two weeks on each tune now…” The follow up, ‘Project Bassline,’ tore up the Miami Winter Dance Music Conference then the ‘U.F.O’ EP secured Jack Beats’ reputation, defining the fantastically multi-stranded sound that’s all over their music. Those early releases also drove a huge demand for their out of control DJ sets and ever since 2008 the pair have been touring the States with artists like A-Trak and Diplo. Their American status has led them to collaborating with Skrillex, 12th Planet and Example on tracks for the forthcoming Jack Beats mini albums. Over the course of the two mini albums, recent single ‘End Of Love’ features a Leonard Cohen sample that the man himself approved, while Example appears sounding quite unlike he ever has done before on the track ‘War.’ Ben points to the brilliant ‘Revolution’ – taken from the second mini album – as a piece that embodies the sentiment of their music. “It has this hyperactive, hard electronic edge, but it’s really melodic. And it goes off!” “For me it’s all about ‘Hooligans’,” says Niall. “That’s a big club tune with a wicked intro – we love a big intro! That’s a pure hands-in-the-air rave moment…” The title track of the first mini album, ‘Careless,’ seems to be taking Jack Beats in another direction again. “Definitely,” smiles Ben. “The music’s developing really quickly and it’s getting very hard. These days, wherever we’re playing in the world, kids just want it to slam. Wherever we play, whatever place we’re playing, it could be a club for 100 people or festival with 10,000 people, the tracks that get the biggest reactions are the ones that are just slamming. Pure bangers!” “It’s exciting when music goes into a period like this,” Niall says. “It’s so different with so many new things happening and influences start to pan out in interesting ways.” Ultimately, Jack Beats have got a mass of ambitions, the main one being to get their music to as many people as possible. “If a year ago someone had said our music would come out on a major label across the world I’d have fallen over laughing,” says Niall. “We began life as an underground crew making tunes for Sunday night hardcore clubbers. Suddenly it gets to this level ands it’s shocking, but we’ve been around enough to know that we’re here on the merit of what we’ve done. We’re not trying to be something we’re not.” And that is the key to Jack Beats, that’s why their plan works. They are making exactly the music they want to make and the world is coming to them. “It’s exciting because we’re already way past where we thought we would ever get,” says Ben. “And we’ve got here by staying true to the people we’ve always been.” “We’re still striving,” laughs Niall. “Still looking for the next goal to achieve.”

Convention is shape-shifted into new life by the koan – an impenetrable concept, crafted for use in Buddhist meditation. The same methodology is precisely what can always be expected of music duo KOAN Sound … Broadcast on several releases by Skrillex’s OWSLA imprint, alongside the UK’s Inspected Records, the group’s output showcases the vast range of musical territories they inhabit. Be it the formative techy weight renovating established dance music structures on their first releases from hometown labels in Bristol, the mutated brutality of their mid-tempo constructions – or even the cinematic journeys through orchestral expanses, revealed on their 2013 Sanctuary EP – members Jim Bastow and Will Weeks distinguish themselves across genres with inspired creativity, meticulous production finesse, and emphatic mastership of groove. Their infamous funk-infused formulations (perhaps most prevalent on their Funk Blaster EP) thrill audiences and DJs the world over, frequently synthesizing live instrumentation: a residual quality of their earliest days as a live band, with their vital and emblematic production. Hyper-creative and sophisticated in craft, San Francisco-based electronic act The M Machine bring a rare mix of genre-bending ingenuity and refined musicianship to every element of their musical output. With their most recent EP—the five-song ‘Just Like’, released on Skrillex’s OWSLA label in November 2014—vocalist/composer/producers Ben Swardlick and Eric Luttrell deliver a deeply melodic and infectiously upbeat take on underground house. Not only a dramatic departure from their darkly charged earlier work, ‘Just Like’ finds The M Machine abandoning all EDM convention and creating a vocal-propelled, indie-minded breed of dance music that hinges on pure emotion and unbridled energy. As with their many much-acclaimed remixes (such as their official reworkings of Bruno Mars’s “Locked Out Of Heaven,” Passion Pit’s “Take a Walk,” and Empire of the Sun’s “DNA”), the latest step in The M Machine’s artistic progression is both intensely club-oriented and boldly inventive. Revealing a supreme grasp of rhythm and groove honed in part from their lengthy live experience (including support slots on tours with artists like Porter Robinson and The Glitch Mob), ‘Just Like’ infuses The M Machine’s delicate balance of artistry and emotionalism into everything from the heady, bass-heavy throb of the title track to the heart-on-sleeve dream-pop of “Over/Love” to the sunny, spaced-out synth of “Don’t Speak.” Both lifelong music obsessives who’d played piano and guitar since they were kids, Swardlick and Luttrell began experimenting with making melody-driven electronic music as students at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Soon after graduating and moving to San Francisco, The M Machine crossed paths with Skrillex, showed their music to the six-time Grammy Award-winner, and ended up signed to his just-launched label by 2011. In April 2012, OWSLA put out The M Machine’s ‘Metropolis Pt. I’, a concept EP inspired by Fritz Lang’s groundbreaking 1927 sci-fi film. Like ‘Metropolis Pt. 2’ (a follow-up EP released in February 2013), The M Machine’s debut drew from the movie’s dystopian vision and constructed a lush but brooding sound that garnered serious critical praise and—along with the group’s appearances at major festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival, and Tomorrowland—helped the group gain a massive following. For much of the first five years of The M Machine’s lifespan, Swardlick and Luttrell holed up in a warehouse/recording studio that was once home to arena-rock legends Journey and—under The M Machine’s wing—eventually evolved into an a collective of visual artists, engineers, and designers who shared their DIY ethic and restless creativity. The duo continue to sustain the passion for constant innovation that’s powered the project since the beginning. And no matter how the mood of their music changes over the years, The M Machine remain committed to building their sound around a strong emotional core. “We’re proud to have a fan base as creative and taste-driven as we are.” says Swardlick. Luttrell adds “in general we really want them to fall in love with something they’ve never heard before.”

The allusive 7 foot Italian maverick known as ‘Phonat’ has become one of the most respected and esteemed electronic producers in Europe over the last few years, with his debut album ‘Phonat’ being critically acclaimed as a land mark genre defining electronic album. Michele Balduzzi began making music in his home village in rural Tuscany in Italy and was quickly spotted by MofoHifi Records recording under the name Phonat. Armed with a five year old laptop and a Fender Strat the young Italian moved to a bedsit in Dalston, London where he spent two years recording his debut album in a small basement in London Bridge. The result is an album that takes the listener on a genre defying musical journey similar to that which Phonat took in his own life moving from idyllic rural Italy to the chaos and colour of London. The album encompasses French house, D&B, nu disco, mash up, metal, trip hop, ragga, down tempo, funk, fidget, electro and rock. From the hypnotic ‘It’s For You’, the ground breaking ‘Learn to Recycle’ and ending in the dysfunctional masterpiece ‘London’. The album is now being released across the globe, with numerous tracks being used in computer games and TV shows. Highly acclaimed videos have been made by long term Italian collaborator Rocco Pezzella. Along with his album, Phonat has also released several EPs including the Cockroaches EP and has remixed artists as diverse as Skrillex and Dizzee Rascal. Seven Lions is quickly taking the dance world hostage with his deep, soulful, hybridized creations – at times elegant, at others pulverizing – all distinctly his own. Seven Lions’ Polarize EP, one of the most promising releases of the last year in the EDM world, just dropped in April and has already garnered praise for its melding of main room bombast with a very sensitive, human touch. For Seven Lions (neé Jeff Montalvo) ‘fast’ is an understatement for how his work has spread virally amongst fans of trance, dubstep, and everything in between. The 25 year old California native has been the center of attention as of late but has maintained a humility throughout. The artist released an unofficial remix of Florence and the Machine’s “Cosmic Love” in March and has been a runaway YouTube hit as Florence’s vocals align perfectly with the producer’s yearning, sinewy compositions. Following the release of the Polarize EP (which charted in the top 5 overall charts on BeatPort), several of his productions are at any given time on the BeatPort dubstep Top 30. His international following has grown exponentially over the past few months -everything from getting airplay on BBC’s Radio1 to headlining seminal clubs in the States and elsewhere, but this is no overnight success story. It started early on in his life when, at age 7, his father brought home the family’s first computer: a Macintosh and keyboard. After playing in metal and punk bands throughout middle school and high school, Montalvo segued into production in his late teens. “For me, it was the most accessible thing, to start picking up something like drums as opposed to something like electronic music. My transition out of playing with a band was because I got tired of waiting for my band all the time — I wanted to just start making music so I started composing electronic music by myself,” Montalvo explains. After a friend gave Montalvo the program Fruity Loops, he began experimenting with industrial drum beats and toying with genre cross-pollinations. Montalvo attended his first rave in 2007 and was immediately inspired to produce trance. However, he slowly found that broken beat came more naturally to the drummer-at-heart. “It’s more like playing a real instrument, as opposed to doing the four-on-the-floor disco beat. It’s more natural for me,” he says. Not long after, his remix of Above & Beyond feat. Zoe Johnston’s “You Got To Go” served as his breakout hit and introduction to the EDM world. “I won the official remix competition, which is how I got involved with [Above & Beyond]. I don’t know if they were expecting the track to do as well as it did. But it definitely got their attention, and now they’re wanting to work with me more.” That the remix “did well” is an understatement — typical of the soft-spoken Montalvo. The meteoric track sat at #2 on Beatport’s Dubstep chart for over 6 weeks, second only to Skrillex’s remix of “Levels”, with hundreds of thousands of listens on YouTube. From metal band member, to solo industrial producer, to a trance-dub trailblazer — he’s already achieved quite a diverse oeuvre, but his work seems to be only beginning. An innovative, fresh-thinking producer, Seven Lions is one of the more beautiful but dance-centered artists you’re likely to discover for a while.
In a cluttered home studio in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District, mere blocks from where he wrote “Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites”, the song that sold millions of copies and helped instigate one of the largest shifts in modern American music in recent memory, the galvanizing totem of a youth movement daps at a midi controller, ceaselessly cuing the same snare sound over and over and over and over, for literally hours. Literally. Hours. Skrillex has a lot of thank yous. At around the one-minute mark of his first Grammy acceptance speech in 2012, iPhone in hand, scrolling interminably down a list, it became clear that Skrillex doesn’t feel isolated from his peers. It’s always been a defining trait of his character, this aptitude at building things with others. It’s since gone on to characterize, color, and define his career, too. Whether with his label, OWSLA, his numerous media projects, the NEST online community or the building in downtown LA he’s currently converting into a state-of-the art creative space, Skrillex knows there’s power in numbers. Skrillex quite simply loves to make things. Across the board, those numbers are significant- when a person with one of the largest social media followings in the world decides to engage his community, they engage back. Within a year of forming the label, OWSLA, in 2011, it had launched the careers of some of the most buzzing names in American electronic music, all the while staying true to their connection to the community of artists around them and exploring multiple genres along the way. OWSLA continues to pick up momentum, more heads become aware every day, and they tell their friends. One year later Skrillex collaborated with friend/cult filmmaker Harmony Korine by scoring his critically acclaimed Spring Breakers movie and also composed an original track for Pixar’s Wreck It Ralph while simultaneously penning one of the biggest club hits of the year with A$AP Rocky (Wild For The Night). He then dropped his first fashion collaboration with G-Star around the same time (it sold out globally in a matter of days). Three consecutive homeruns across a broad appeal spectrum, but it’s easy to identify commonalities among these seemingly disparate projects when they’re examined in this uniquely Skrillex context – awesomeness prevails, always. And it’s always a team effort. And every team needs a dugout. So when Sonny returned to Los Angeles to rally the troops, plucking talent from France, Spain, Chicago, Florida, and Tennessee this last spring he purchased an 11,000 square foot compound nestled in the heart of LA. It currently houses his label, management, and publicity staffs as well as a new, futurist venture called NESTHQ.com. The project, which began as a subscription-based sub-label of OWSLA, began to take on new meaning as the team sought to further integrate all of the Skrillex and OWSLA-related media content into one vertical silo. NESTHQ.com was formed as a means of iterating the values and personalities of the dance music community, Skrillex’s community, in one consistently positive voice. The building itself is the physical manifestation of this intent and more plans are underway to construct several high-end recording studios, media production labs, video suites and other creative spaces to further inspire the associated artists under the OWSLA/Skrillex umbrella. But let’s get back to that snare sound. Sonny John Moore, the man who upended popular music in 2011, knows there’s too much in the balance, and he addresses the seemingly menial with utmost gravity. He invests himself into everything he does. It’s not just a career at stake. Skrillex acknowledges the huge responsibility we all have to bring positivity into the world through art and expression, and that whether its iterated musically or otherwise, getting those ideas out is group therapy at its best. We’re in this together, so let’s get it right. Finally, despite being one of the biggest names in music, Skrillex hasn’t walked away from the ‘do-it-ourselves’ attitude he’s had since his start. “When you grow you’re going to need more people, more bodies to do stuff,” he said. “It’s all about making true partnerships. I think the less you can take out of something and the more you can do yourself, it’s more equal-interest. So you’re not taking out big bank loans, you’re betting on yourself and you can sustain everything. Maybe it takes a little longer — it’s been since 2004 to get to where I am now, with the same team, the same manager. That’s how we did it. There was no rush ever to get giant checks.” Throughout all of this, he’s decided to keep the music industry at an arm’s length. “I kind of wanted to stay away from Hollywood… I guess my scene and the energy and the core of where I came from is Downtown L.A. and throwing warehouse parties and being inspired by spaces that gushed potential, more than something that was already done.”

Hailing from the Netherlands, Bart van der Meer – known as Bart B More – has been a constant factor in the international electronic dance music scene for many years. His love for DJing and producing has taken him to every continent on the planet, leaving his audience with something to remember – or not to remember. Bart B More’s genre-bending style has helped him to become one of the most renown and respected electronic music producers today. He steers away from a traditional production formula to help create his own signature sound: A fusion of deep techno and heart-pumping electro, with an unusual swing in the drum patterns. His eclectic mix of synths, unparalleled sonic range, hard-hitting drops, and heavy bass lines have helped him to create a distinct and original style. The ability to make each beat, synth, and drop flow seamlessly together in his sets, has made Bart a well seen guest at events all over the globe. Bart does not discriminate against mainstream and underground music, and prefers to draw inspiration from anywhere and everywhere; “The limitations and borders a genre can imply sometimes kills creativity in the producing process, and that’s something artists deal with. I try to stay away from that mind frame, and just create how I feel.” His non-commitment to any specific genre and ever-changing tastes make each one of his shows a whole new, fresh experience: “Every set to me is a challenge to entertain a crowd, to bring forward my musical taste but also read the crowds mood. And if that’s the same thing, that’s when I love what I do the most.” In 2008, Bart found a new challenge and created his own label, Secure Recordings. Since then, the label has been an outlet for Bart to release his own music as well as share his various tastes and musical range. By starting his own label, he’s able to showcase not only his own style, but also give new artists a platform to release their music. Bart is a firm believer in supporting new and up and coming artists, and by establishing Secure Recordings he’s able to give them a chance to make their mark in the industry. In addition to his own label, Bart has had the opportunity to release many of his tracks with some of the industry’s top labels including: Boys Noize, OWSLA, Relief Records, Sound Pellegrino, Fool’s Gold, Trouble & Bass etc. By releasing with different labels he has been able to reach an even larger and more diverse demographic, putting him into the spotlight of many devout electronic dance music fans. In the future, Bart B More hopes to continue to have a role in the responsibility to keep dance music forward thinking, innovative, and open minded.
French quartet Birdy Nam Nam had already shook things up back in 2009 with A Manual For Successful Rioting : farewell, the playful and smokey abstract hip-hop heard on their first LP, and hello, heavy motorized electro beats design to cause mayhem in clubs and venues worldwide. The massive following tour could only confirm the band’s high profile on stage : performing live, members Crazy B, Pone, Need and Lil’Mike sound and look like a punk outfit raised on Bambaataa and Daft Punk rather than the Clash and the Pistols. In 2010, BNN won a « Victoire de la musique » (the French equivalent of a Grammy award) in the electronic music category – David Guetta was also competing. Then they got back into their studio to start recording a third record. And they wanted to make something even more astonishing than their previous one. Something maybe a little less rockin and bangin, a little less obviously dance floor-oriented. Chance made that next to their studio was working Parisian producer Para One, a guy able to do techno anthems as well as digital funk jams, ambient soundtracks or future rap beats. The boys shared with him a set of common roots in hip-hop and its defining taste for wild synthesis of genres and vibes ; after a few coffee machines conversations, they all felt a collaboration could be really nice. Then three months later, the job was done : ideas were swapped and enchanced, going back and forth between the BNN lab and Para One’s unit, and the result is a rich, versatile creature, born from continuous sensitive work-out from the five artists. This is a record that has a lot to give to its listeners, and that watches everywhere without forbidding itself anything. So the whole thing is rammed with aural details and feelings, but it never sounds messy or bric-a-brac-minded. Its tightness is almost a miracle: how could it be thought out and finished within three months and sound so solid and matured – but not mature, mind you – while blending so many different styles and atmospheres ? Maybe just because the maturation process, for these guys, has been taking place for a good ten years (and even more for veteran DJ Crazy B) : more than a decade spent absorbing with unsatiable appetite an extremely large range of music. BNN, with the help of Para One, actually updated one of the essence of hip-hop music: the hedonist will to mix very diverse references and influences coming from a vast, hyperactive environment. So this album sometimes sounds like it tells a parallel, utopia-infused story of hip-hop music, like if hip-hop hadn’t got so self-sufficient, and instead had tried mingling with R&B vocal chops, space-jazz synths, IDM digital breaks or US house and techno body-grooves. A Manual for Successful Rioting was full of straight-forward,cathartic numbers ; now Defiant Order is more into oblique, obssessive rhythms. No pretentious experiments, though: BNN are definitely not professional scientists of club music. Taking artistic and technical risks just gives them the opportunity to make their tracks even more thrilling and exhilarating. Today’s mainstream hits produced by « edgy » names is most frequently not edgy, and simply not exciting : doesn’t it seem like the fantasy of avant-garde chart pop has vanished in recent years ? With this new LP, BNN decided to take the (almost) exact opposite way, and it’s a pretty rare thing, we have to say : here’s a globally famous band, reknown for having at first crossed-over, but that now goes back to something people used to call « the underground ». This is a radical, daring record, though it’ll painlessly reach its audience – because after all there’s no more mass-market VS underground circuits: there’s just plenty of good music here, and plenty of people to love it.
Blood Diamonds, aka Michael Diamond, is a twenty-two year old Los Angeles-based pop artist best known for his imaginative soundscapes and infectious, sun-dipped production. Coming from a background in classical and modernistic jazz from his adolescence in Kansas City and then after moving to Vancouver to study a degree in video game design, he became absorbed in all music electronic and quickly started to write and play live. Lifting influences from RnB, dubstep and dream pop, Blood Diamond’s music can truly be marked as quintessentially his own. Having become quickly known for his remixes and collaborations, Blood Diamonds latest 12″ release ‘Phone Sex’ (ft. Grimes) is out now on 4AD and his debut full length is slated for mid- 2013.
Known for his earth-shaking live performances and cutting-edge albums, Francesco “Phra” Barbaglia has quickly become one of the most prominent djs working today. As the founding member of Crookers, he has shown the ability to not only create massive club hits but also a desire to push the genre forward through fearless innovation and a tireless work ethic. With numerous remix credits for artists ranging from the Chemical Bros to Kid Cudi, a recent, highly acclaimed live set at EDC and a new album in the works, Phra has shown no signs of slowing down. Born in the quiet town of Omegna, Italy, Phra seemed destined to follow in the footsteps of his dentist-father until a family cruise at age 11 exposed him to the world of dj’ing. From that moment on, he was hooked. Initially focusing his attention on hip-hop, Phra began experimenting with his craft while working at a local club just minutes from his parents’ home. It was here that he began honing his sound, blending elements of house, bossa nova, jazz and funk together into mixes that were unlike anything else at the time. Not content with simply playing what was “safe,” he continued to push the envelope, and it wasn’t long before he achieved his first major success when, in 2008, his remix of Kid Cudi’s “Day ‘N Nite” reached #2 on the UK sales chart. 2010 saw the release of Crookers’ debut album Tons of Friends. Featuring an all-star lineup that included the likes of Miike Snow, Pitbull and Major Lazer, Phra deftly combined elements from a variety of musical genres, receiving widespread praise from fans and critics alike. The 2011 follow up, Dr. Gonzo, proved to be another step forward for Phra, as he once again showcased his ability to produce catchy club beats without compromising his identity as a boundaries-breaking artist. Never one to sit still for very long, Phra has already begun work on his next album, with two tracks set to debut in October ahead of the planned 2014 release date. When he’s not busy performing for sold out crowds at festivals around the world or working with some of the biggest names in music, Phra splits his time between his two record labels: Lucky Beard and Ciao Recs. Looking for a way to explore the limits of his profession while working with his friends, what started as a passion project has turned into one of the best sources for underground music available. With artists such as Anubi, Digi and Stabber among the current active roster, all signs point to Lucky Beard and Ciao Recs continuing to be industry leaders far into the future.
Destructo (Gary Richards) began DJing and producing undergrounds in the early 90s in Los Angeles, most notably creating RaveAmerica at Knotts Berry Farm. Rick Rubin subsequently handpicked Gary for A&R in electronic music at Def American Recordings, launching a noteworthy career with such acts as Lords of Acid, Messiah, David Holmes, Basement Jaxx, Dub Pistols, God Lives Underwater and founding 1500 Records and Nitrus Records. After carrying his success to the metal world with No Name Mgmt, Destructo returned to his roots in 2007 by creating HARD. HARD events such as the HARD Haunted Mansion have become synonymous with cutting edge electronic music and unforgettable experiences, where the talent rosters reflect Destructo’s own impeccable DJ sets.

MONSTA have been described as having the melodic synth thrum of Flux Pavilion, the tech-soul vocal drops of Moby and the reverberant snares of trip-hop act U.N.K.L.E. -but their sound is instrument-based and largely sample-free and it was Skrillex who found them. The trio (producers Rocky and Rufio and vocalist Skaar) will release their first EP on the electronic dance music (EDM) star’s indie imprint OWSLA this summer. “I was at South by Southwest with my manager Tim [Smith] and a few friends,” says Skrillex. “Tim says, ‘I got something,’ and pulls up [MONSTA’s ‘Holdin’ On’]. I said, ‘That’s a sick track and a cool vocal sample. Where’d they get that from? Is that Aretha Franklin?’’ But it wasn’t a sample. It was Skaar’s powerfully androgynous performance of an original song written and recorded by the group. ‘Holdin’ On’ has all the makings of a radio hit-not only an irresistible vocal hook, but a complete verse-chorus-verse song structure. The EP boasts remixes from electronic music’s finest; Dillon Francis, Alvin Risk and even though he has turned down requests from the worlds biggest stars, Skrillex has cleared his schedule to put his mark on the EP with an exclusive remix too (his last one won him a Grammy Award). “This is not your typical dubstep. A lot of that has already become cliché,” he says. “This is next-level.” Signed to the same management stable as Chase & Status, Knife Party and Sub Focus and remixing for artists such as Zedd, Labrinth and Skylar Grey; MONSTA have been played by Zane Lowe on Radio 1 as his ‘Next Hype’ and featured by the likes of NME, 1883, Disorder and included in Billboard magazine’s albums for Summer 2012, ‘40 Hottest Releases’. MONSTA are becoming a regular feature on the club and festival circuit, having already wowed crowds at Camden Crawl, Wireless and Isle of Wight Festival and have been personally invited by Xfm’s Eddy Temple Morris to play a coveted slot at this years sold out Secret Garden Party.
In his own words, Nick Thayer might be best described as “the musical equivalent of putting seven glowsticks in a blender”. As renowned for uninhibited and unashamedly eclectic DJ sets as he is for impeccable production, Nick’s cut-loose mentality is his trademark both in the club and in the studio. “I don’t care about genres. Good music is good music,” he says. You could put this unbound attitude down to his classically trained background, his stint in grunge and funk bands or even his lifelong love of hair rock. Whatever it is, one thing’s certain: Nick Thayer was made for this. A hugely successful AV show in conjunction with visual artist sevenmilligram is another very special trick up Nick’s sleeve. This show is like no other; it’s a complete assault on the senses and needs to be seen to be believed. Following on from his 2010 album Just Let It Go – which was nominated for Best Electronic Album at the Australian Independent Music Awards – 2012 sees Nick signing to Skrillex’s OWSLA label with the Like Boom EP. The result is worth the wait; showing scant regard for genres or tempos, or even accepted notions of what club music should be, it promises to rip sound systems apart.
At 21, life is usually filled with exams, a first job, or even a small amount of uncertainty as to what you want to do in life… Porter Robinson however, has broken the mold completely. Having already featured twice in the Billboard 21 Under 21, where he ranked ahead of the likes of Miley Cyrus and Cher Lloyd, you begin to quickly see that Porter is no ordinary talent. Growing up in the sleepy town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Porter began producing music at the tender age of 13, having caught the bug from Dance Dance Revolution. Fast forward several years later, and releases such as “Say My Name” were quickly attracting attention from all the right places. His very first EP, “Spitfire”, was quickly signed by Skrillex as the first release for his new OWSLA label. Upon release, the EP crashed Beatport’s servers and headed straight for #1 in the charts where it remained for weeks. This was all done in between remixes for the likes of Avicii and Lady Gaga… all in the same year he celebrated his 18th birthday. From here on, it was full steam ahead. Picking up support slots on tours with Skrillex and then on Tiësto’s infamous College Invasion tour, people began to take note of Porter’s unique style of mixing and the insane energy he showed behind the decks. In addition to these colossal artist tours, Porter also made his way onto the stages of Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival and Electric Zoo; as well as landing himself in the DJ Mag Top 100. 2012 saw him shift into even higher gear, growing swiftly into a headline act capable of hosting any event all on his own. Porter also tackled Coachella, Tomorrowland, and Lollapalooza, as well as a residency with the revered XS, Surrender, and Encore Beach properties in Las Vegas. His next creation, “Language”, premiered on Radio 1 during Porter’s special live Essential Mix broadcast in January 2012 before going on to worldwide success, securing #1 on Beatport and a number of Top 10 chart positions around the world. The record has since gone on to sell over 250,000 copies, cementing Porter’s break into the big leagues. Porter began 2013 with the release of his much-acclaimed Mat Zo co-production “Easy”, which quickly reached #1 on both Beatport and HypeMachine, and gained traction across radio and charts globally. From here his sights are firmly set on his first full-length artist album, drawing on elements and influences across a wide range of genres. The debut outing will see Porter break all preconceptions and join the ranks of luminaries he’s admired his entire career. In addition to the music, his touring is continuing to go from strength to strength, where he recently appeared once more at Tomorrowland, as well as Wireless Festival, Creamfields, Fuji Rock and a trifecta of Electric Daisy Carnival appearances in Las Vegas, London, and New York. Set to accomplish more by the age of 21 than most achieve in a lifetime, Porter is unmistakably one of the most thrilling talents to be found anywhere in the world. Only he knows what’s next. We just know we can’t stop him.
Ollie ‘Skream’ Jones is on a major roll. The 24 year old Croydon DJ, producer and original dubstepper had the festival anthem of last year with his Let’s Get Ravey remix of La Roux’s ‘In For The Kill'; he’s just been featured on the cover of NME with his Magnetic Man co-stars Benga and Artwork; and as we speak, he is all over Radio 1 with the first single from his second solo album, Outside The Box. The tune in question, ‘Listenin To The Records On My Wall’, is the perfect introduction to why Skream’s current level of success is just the beginning. It’s a joyful, ragingly energetic celebration of the last quarter decade of British street music, inspired by the hardcore and jungle records used by his older brother Hijak who was part of Grooverider’s Internatty Crew. It’s also a brilliant pop record that makes perfect sense to everyone who grew up surrounded by the breaks and beats of the 1990s – and to those who didn’t. This, however, is not a revival record. A natural born modernist, Skream has selected 14 tracks that cover hip hop (‘8-Bit Baby’, with LA rapper Murs from Living Legends), bass-wobbling dubstep (the self-explanatory ‘Wibbler’), dreamy electronica (‘Perferated’), a dark and tribal track with La Roux, and a strong dose of euphoric jungle on ‘The Epic Last Tune'; a track that is inadvisable to listen to whilst driving – unless you want another six points on your licence. A lot has happened since the 16 year old Skream left school with no GCSEs and a top-flight training in white labels and nightclubs. “I hated school and school hated me. I was rarely there and rarely wanted to be there. When I first saw music being made on a PlayStation, that was it. There was never going to be anything else. I know people who got 5 A-Cs but now they look like they’re dying of boredom.” He started working at Big Apple Records in Croydon, a place that holds the same place in street-up dance music as Rough Trade does in punk. Arthur ‘Artwork’ Smith and Danny Harrison, 2-Step remixers du jour circa 1998, had a studio upstairs and when Skream and Benga weren’t downstairs in the shop, they were watching and learning from their local masters at work. “The shop helped me grow up to be not a dickhead in terms of talking to people I didn’t know. You’d get builders coming in buying garage records and you’d have top distributors. I met so many different people from different places.” In the early days of dubstep he and his Big Apple posse made music for themselves and a select band of listeners. There might have been 20 people at FWD>>, the night where resident DJ Hatcha first played Skream’s records, and where he first DJed, but it didn’t matter. Gradually, more people got involved, drawn in by the raw power of the music and well-documented tipping points like Mary Anne Hobb’s Radio 1 show and an influential online forum. And if they heard anyone, they heard Skream, who became an enthusiastic regular on the international dubstep circuit and made an early anthem in ‘Midnight Request Line’. “That tune was when people from the mainstream started looking into the underground. They weren’t embracing it, they were like ‘wow there’s this movement’… and they moved on.” Then, in 2006, he got the parts to Hot Chip’s ‘No Fit State’ and began playing it out. The following year he contacted The Klaxon’s record label for the parts to ‘Not Over Yet’, stripped it down, added synthetic rushes and major bass power, and made it his own. Then came La Roux. Skream’s now infamous remix of “In For The Kill” that got leaked, downloaded thousands of times, and then before long Annie Mac was championing it, urging listeners to get the mix to Number One. He has always made tunes at an incredible rate: he has two albums (Skream! in 2006 and Outside The Box), two compilations and 81 tunes released since 2003 and many hundreds more he’s played during DJ sets. There are 872 finished songs on the hard drive he’s been using since 2007 (and about the same on the hard drive he used between 2001 and 2007) and at least 20,000 song files in his current studio which is still in his old bedroom at his parents house, which is useful for both continuity and tea and toast on tap. “I work at a fast rate. If I’m not into an idea after 25 minutes I start something else.” Outside The Box is the sound of an artist who is ready to take his considerable talents to a wider audience without compromising any of the raw, hedonistic, emotional, loose-yourself madness that has made him literally legendary to the hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Take ‘Where You Should Be’ a song which could have been made by Mike Skinner had he spent his whole life inside nightclubs, and features singer and songwriter Sam Frank. “I don’t think I’ll ever be sick of that track. I’ve easily listened to it 500 times. It’s not fundamentally for the dancefloor.” There’s the 8-bit computer game inspiration of ‘CPU'; the Daft Punk styled vocals of ‘How Real’ feat Freckles; the tuff but soothing heart-beat of ‘Fields Of Emotion’ and the Jocelyn Brown-sampling ‘I Love The Way’, which sees the first lady of disco pitched right down (‘she sounds well mannish”) and which you might have heard at Skream’s massive festival sets at Pukkelpop, Glastonbury or Roskilde, where he and Benga began their crowd-surfing habit. Towards the end of the album, there are moments that point in a whole new direction, like ‘Reflections’, a tune written with talented drum ‘n’ bassheads dBridge and Instra:mental. “It’s opened my eyes to a whole new way of working. I was playing the bass, and they were programming drums and playing the pads and strings. I was used to sitting in front of a screen.” And then there’s ‘Song For Lenny’, a sad and very personal musical dedication to a lost friend. Album aside, life’s busy for Oliver Jones. He’s back DJing after taking some time out at the start of the year, switching up his DJ sets to include 4/4, techno, garage and grime – in fact there’s a brilliant track with Newham Generals ‘I Can’t Wait’ that missed the album tracklist by a whisker – and, most weeks, hosting his Rinse FM show–now alongside Benga–where listeners get to hear new tunes and Skream and Benga’s inimitable banter. There will be a bonus edition of the album with another four or five tracks on it, and another Skreamizm EP later in the year, as well as the Magnetic Man live shows and album. It’s going to a big summer, inside and outside the box.
From his beginnings as a bedroom DJ five years ago, to headlining the Glade stage at Glastonbury in 2010, Nick Douwma, better known as Sub Focus, has become one of the most interesting, innovative and important voices working in British electronic music today. Douwma has created compositions for Chase & Status (Flashing Lights) and Example (Kickstarts), remixed The Prodigy, Deadmau5 and Dizzee Rascal, while his own tracks (including Airplane, X-Ray, Rock It, Could This Be Real) have won Sub Focus fans in the form of Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Grooverider and Mistajam. As a DJ, Douwma has played at every major club night and festival around the world, with the recent EDC in Las Vegas helping to push his US profile exponentially. Since his beginnings as a Jungle DJ, to becoming one of Bass music’s key composers, Sub Focus has cemented his status as a forward-thinking creator with an incredible cannon of compositions. Sub Focus’s second solo album, as yet untitled, will further propel him into the realms of both credible notoriety and mainstream success – no easy feat. With features from The Alpines, Jess Mills and Kele Okerere (for whom he engineered 2010’s The Hunter) initial reactions have been overwhelming. Debuted by Douwma during a guest mix for Mistajam’s Radio 1 show, first single Out The Blue, featuring Alice Gold, had 250,000 views on YouTube in just one week, and was played by every major Bass DJ you can mention. Mixing Vangelis-like synths with Gold’s captivating vocals, it’s a brilliantly paced, deftly constructed D&B smash that will propel the 29 year-old straight back into the charts. Refusing to be stuck within one genre, Sub Focus has ventured far and wide around the world of dance music. If it has bass and a hard hitting hook, he’s on it. “In the early days when I got into dance music, people were very tribal about what they would and would not listen to, and coming out of that period has been refreshing,” he says. “I like writing different types of music, so I threw caution to the wind and started putting more varied tempo music out there and the response was great,” he says of songs that have ranged far and wide through the world of Dance music. “The whole scene is evolving and people are experimenting with different tempos much more now – branching out without fear of the stigma.” This is brilliantly reflected on the new album, which effortlessly balances Dubstep, D&B, 90s Jungle, 80s rave, Future Garage and even a steel pan symphony. “I like pulling threads from places that maybe aren’t meant to go together,” he nods. “I’m quite a magpie in the way I look at music.” While his music has huge mainstream potential, he’s wary of playing to the crowd purely for pop star status. Like his contemporaries Nero, Skream & Benga and Chase & Status, he strives to stay true to his musical roots. Wary of doing anything too obvious, he explores the line between being popular without trying to court the commercial. “Trying to strike that balance is one of my main goals – writing underground music with mass appeal.” Beginning his career in the Jungle scene after leaving behind his teenage indie band and being blown away by the Prodigy and Incredible by General Levy, Nick balanced his neophyte beat-making career with Art & Design. After switching to Sound Engineering at London Met, Douwma dropped out to concentrate on music as he quickly found himself one of Drum & Bass’s leading players. X-Ray was the track that got him noticed, before his seminal remix of the Prodigy’s Smack My Bitch Up, which allowed him to tour throughout America, Europe and Japan. Signed to the legendary Ram Records, his debut self titled album solidified Sub Focus as a serious player in the world of Electronic music. Since then, as club music’s boundaries have altered, his creations have been supported by everyone from Skream to Andy C, Annie Mac to Jack Beats. Late last year, Sub Focus signed a deal to license his second album to Mercury Records which is due for release in late 2012. Like two of his key influences the Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk, Sub Focus is interested in pushing the boundaries of both the live and recorded experience. For his incredible new stage show he has had a series of exciting gizmos made such as motion sensors which enable him to trigger both sound and light by movement; it needs to be seen to be understood! Within his studio you can expect to see ten types of keyboards from a vintage Roland Juno to the latest Teenage Engineering synthesisers. “I’m very deep into the technical side of things,” he laughs. “With the live show I’m incorporating improvisation, but in an electronic way. I’m using motion sensors, keyboards and computers to play my tracks, all synchronised to a light show based around my disc logo. I want to take the ideas of visualising electronic performance that started with the likes of Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis and push them a little bit further.” This Summer Sub Focus will be playing at a host of major festivals, including Snowbombing, V Festival and Coachella. With the likes of Skrillex winning Grammys, when asked about the future of the industry, Douwma says ‘It’s a great time to be making this music as it really seems as if there are no limits to where it can go now.”
There are few figures in electronic music who manage to combine commercial success with underground respectability. The Bristol-based producer and DJ known as TC is one such individual, utilising his talents to comfortably flit between remixing Number One artists and unleashing rave-razing bass-driven monsters pitched straight at the underground. Sitting atop of an anthem-packed discography that includes some of the most memorable dancefloor tracks of modern times, and with remixes for the likes of Rihanna, Damian Marley & Nas and Tinie Tempah behind him, TC should need little introduction to any fan of bass-driven music. First emerging with tracks for one of jungle/D&B’s most legendary labels, Dillinja’s Valve Recordings, it was the release of TC’s debut album ‘Evolution’ in 2007 that propelled the young producer to D&B’s top table. Packed with anthems such as the utterly unique ‘Deep’ featuring MC Jakes, ‘Jump’, ‘Rockstar’ and the enormous ‘Where’s My Money’ (famously remixed by Caspa), ‘Evolution’ earned TC the titles of ‘Breakthrough Producer’ and ‘Producer Of The Year’ at the BBC Radio 1Xtra Drum & Bass Awards, while catapulting him to the top of Radio One’s National Dance Chart and earning unprecedented radio support from everyone from Pete Tong and Jo Whiley to MAH and Zane Lowe, with the latter bestowing TC with highly regarded ‘Record Of The Week’ title on more than one occasion. More than just another faceless DJ or studio-confined producer, early on TC broke convention by singing on many of his own tracks, and provided vocals for Pendulum’s debut album ‘Hold Your Colour’, a habit he continues to this day, having recently supplied vocals for Hospital starlets Camo & Krooked’s debut LP and the mighty Subfocus’ forthcoming second album. After taking a short break from the spotlight, 2011 saw TC return to the raves and the airwaves in style, dropping one of the year’s biggest D&B bangers ‘Tap Ho’ while turning his hand to dubstep on ‘Concrete’ and drumstep on ‘Burning Starlight’ (both featuring vocals from Dread MC). Released through his own freshly launched record label, Don’t Play, the artistic freedom offered by being his own boss is already clearly paying dividends for TC. “I’m not playing around anymore; I don’t want to do things by halves,” TC stated in a recent interview. “I think I’m at a stage now where I can choose my own path.” And with Don’t Play firing on all cylinders, a packed global DJ schedule and more massive tracks up his sleeve, TC is quite clearly on the right path. 2012 already has his name all over it….
Zedd started with music in his daily routine from early childhood on. Born Anton Zaslavski, Zedd was raised in Kaiserslautern, Germany by two classically trained musicians, he began playing the piano at the age of four and built up his knowledge of the Classical repertoire throughout his childhood, at times writing a song a day. At age twelve, Anton learned to play the drums and, soon after he began performing with the post-hardcore/metal trio Dioramic. As a preteen he was already composing and producing numerous rock songs in his band’s own studio. As the aughts progressed, Anton’s awareness of other genres widened, and in 2009 his interest in producing electronic music was piqued after hearing the French electronic duo Justice. With his gift for musicality and background in instrumentation, composition and production, the move into the realm of electronic dance music was seamless. 2009 proved to be a watershed year for Zedd. It was during this year that he began producing electronic music, and within an incredibly short period of time amassed widespread critical and audience acclaim. Within a few months of beginning his production work, Zedd won two Beatport remix contests, the “Armand Van Helden / Strictly Rhythm Remix Contest” and the “Fatboy Slim / Skint Remix Contest”. These critical wins gave the budding artists the notoriety and clout to catch the interest of Skrillex who essentially found him on the net and signed him to his new OWSLA label. He caught the ear of Interscope A&R Dave Rene and Interscope Geffen A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine and successfully released several official remixes for powerhouse artists such as Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, P. Diddy, Swedish House Mafia and Skrillex on labels including mau5trap, Interscope, and EMI. In the realm of his original compositions, Zedd’s hit singles ‘Shave It’ and ‘Slam The Door’ (out through OWLSA) both held the top spot on Beatport’s charts for multiple weeks at a time. In the same year, his remix of Lady Gaga’s “Marry the Night” appeared on the deluxe edition of the superstar’s latest album Born This Way and his remix of “Born This Way” appeared on Born This Way: The Remix. In addition to his own compositions and reworkings of others’ songs, Zedd has had other electro heavyweights take their turn at his tracks, including Armin Van Buuren, Kaskade, Knife Party and more. Zedd’s stellar development is undoubtedly linked to his unique and highly recognizable style of composition. It stands out in a crowded field as meticulously detailed and carefully produced, very playful and at the same time remarkably catchy despite the complex musicality drafting it up. Drawing from his diverse musical background spanning from classical to post-hardcore/metal to electro house Zedd’s music not only draws from uncommon sources but also has the ability to appeal to an audience outside the realm EDM. Zedd signed with Interscope records in 2012 and released his debut LP Clarity in October to much critical acclaim. The album’s first single, “Spectrum,” featuring singer/songwriter Matthew Koma, garnered massive global attention climbing into the the Top 10 on the iTunes dance chart and holding on to the #1 spot on Beatport Worldwide for almost three weeks. The track then soared to #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Song chart and was ultimately named their Dance Club Song of the year as well as iTunes “Breakthrough Album of the Year (Dance) for 2012. In addition to racking up original production credits for artists including Eva Simons’ “I Don’t Like You” and Justin Bieber’s “Beauty And A Beat,” Rolling Stone named Zedd an “Artist to Watch” for 2012, and more recently, MTV deemed him an “Artist to Watch” for 2013. Zedd has performed at major festivals, including Ultra, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Nocturnal and in 2012, he performed at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Hard Summer in Los Angeles, and Electric Zoo in New York. Zedd made his national television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman in October where he turned his signature style upside down performing a stripped down version of his new single “Clarity” -showcasing his classical training by playing piano alongside a string quartet and vox from Foxes. The performance is a prime example of Zedd’s true musicianship beyond the realm of EDM. Zedd was also chosen to be the only opening act for the Asian leg of Lady Gaga’s world stadium-tour “The Born This Was Ball”, and will rejoin her for the American leg in the spring of 2013. A musical prodigy from the start, Zedd is already a powerhouse beyond the EDM realm. His originality and momentum will unquestionably propel him into the ranks of superstars.

There are plenty of bass music producers out there grinding away at the seemingly never-ending task of securing a plot of EDM acreage. But Getter, otherwise known at Tanner Petulla, has become increasingly adept at identifying previously unused musical real estate off the grid, bulldozing his current musical ideologies, and then rebuilding an entirely new, futuristic neon palace devoted to reinvention and experimentation. In the not too distant future, he’ll have squatters ready to dye their hair neon for a chance to be part of what Getter will bring to life. Early in his career, Getter asserted himself as one of the most consistent and significanttalents to emerge from the international bass scene. In 2013, Getter released twoBeatport-chart-topping releases including his debut album “I Want More” and “ThrillerEP”, which showed Getter’s expanding and diverse skill set. Skrillex, Flux Pavilion, Datsik and Borgore have rinsed his tunes. His recent releases with the international Bass music Powerhouse Firepower Records shot to the top of the charts and showed an artist confident in his abilities and production prowess. In 2015, Getter will see his work released by the inimitable Dance Music label, OWSLA. But recently, Getter has found an untapped creative outlet in simply allowing his own musical evolution to take place. His signature neon hair and eccentric social media dispatches are reflected in his forthcoming projects, much of which will serve as a bridge over the stagnant waters of musical conformity and connecting the past with the next phase of Bass music production. At times, his work will emerge from a much more serene and meditative side of himself, but this ability to dip into alternate states of creative thinking has remained an essential creative force for understanding his limits and finding ways to push through them. Getter will remain the unsung hero of underground bass culture because he has done wheat the underground values the most: ignoring trends and cutting his own path. It’s a path he’s making sure to cut wide enough for all his fans to walk astride as he makes his way to the next stage.
The Jersey Club King known simply as Sliink is leading a musical movement. He took the reigns as Jersey Club’s first global star, spreading the genre from humble beginnings in Newark’s DIY party spaces to international culture hot spots like London, Paris, Milan and Oslo – not to mention mainstream attention from MTV, SPIN, Vice, and more. After shooting to post-EDM stardom with a collaborative EP on Fool’s Gold with Flosstradamus, sound-tracking Paris runways for Alexander Wang and Rick Owens, and playing festivals around the globe, Sliink is entering the next chapter of his career. The OWSLA Records boss-man Skrillex sought out Sliink’s diverse club sound as the newest addition to their eclectic roster. Hard at work on his first project for the label, you can trust that Sliink has few tricks up his sleeve for 2015.
