PHANTOMS // PHANTOMS EP

RELEASE: 3/15/2013

If you haven’t heard of Phantoms yet, you’re not alone. The two 23-year-olds have taken the 5AM underground dance scene by force seemingly overnight with a unique blend of dirty funk and deep electro grooves all their own. While the rise of the LA-based DJ/producer duo has left many questions unanswered, the buzz surrounding them suggests this may not be the case for long.

Though the pair religiously avoids the limelight, their first official release, the Phantoms EP, offers a vivid elucidation of their nightmarish vision. Reminiscent of a sweaty rave in the basement of a haunted mansion somewhere in Romania, the unique sound masterfully matches supremely simple, yet intensely ominous chord progressions together with piercing tribal drums and raw techno synths to create an almost indiscernible insanity suitable for only the darkest of discotheques. While “Do Yer Thang” utilizes chillingly funky vocal samples to accent a futuristically deep house groove and heart-pounding drum patterns that could serve as the soundtrack for a post-modern-day Patrick Bateman’s sadistic susceptibilities or fuel an equally feverish dance riot all the same, “NYE” explores the future of the traditional club sound, taking the dancefloor on a face-numbing sonic odyssey lasting well into the bright and early hours of the morning and leaving bleary-eyed and cotton-mouthed partygoers wondering what they just heard. Soon, the answer will be illuminated far and wide: Phantoms.
